Telkom University continues to demonstrate its commitment to realizing a Green Campus through various greening efforts in the campus environment. One concrete step that can be seen is the optimization of the area around the building to become a comfortable and functional open space or green open space. Open space means an area that is left open without permanent buildings, which is used as a place for greening, recreation, or public space. As seen in the picture around the Postgraduate building, shady trees and green plants are important elements that provide benefits for both the environment and the entire academic community.
Benefits of Greening in the Campus Area
- Improving Air Quality and Reducing Pollution Trees planted around the building function as natural filters for air pollution. With a sufficient number of trees, carbon dioxide produced from daily activities will be better absorbed, producing clean oxygen to support the health and comfort of students, lecturers, and campus staff. In addition, this open space or green space area helps create a space that is free from pollution, thereby improving air quality in the campus environment.
- Reducing the Heating Effects Around the Building Large campus buildings often emit heat, especially during hot weather. With the presence of green plants and trees, the heat can be absorbed so that the temperature around the building becomes cooler. Green open space is an important part of the open space concept, which functions as a natural cooler and helps reduce the effects of global warming in the campus area. This is in line with the goal of Green Campus to create a more comfortable environment for the entire academic community.
- Supporting Better Water Management The green area around the building also functions as an effective water catchment area. When it rains, the soil around the building can absorb water well, reducing the risk of waterlogging and helping to maintain groundwater balance. This better water management is one of the benefits of open space that is optimized as a green open space, which supports the sustainability of the campus environment as a whole.
Telkom University’s Commitment to Realizing a Green Campus
Telkom University not only focuses on technology and innovation, but also on environmental sustainability. By increasing the green area around the building, the university strives to create an environmentally friendly green open space and align technology with nature. Open space is an integral part of the university’s strategy in creating a healthy and sustainable environment. This is also a strategic step in supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially on points related to environmental management.
Through this greening initiative, it is hoped that the entire academic community of Telkom University can feel the real benefits of a cooler, more comfortable, and healthier campus environment, and together preserve nature for future generations.
